Tohoku University Japanese Programme Winter 2025: Language and Cultural Immersion

Tohoku University conducted its Japanese Programme (TUJP) for Winter 2025, accommodating 62 students from 19 partner universities worldwide for a two-week immersive experience from January 15 to January 28. The program featured intensive Japanese language classes complemented by workshops on traditional culture, with assistance provided by Tohoku University students who served as buddies and teaching assistants.

Program Structure

Students were grouped into four categories based on language proficiency, participating in a curriculum that included basic conversational skills as well as discussions on complex issues such as the consequences of natural disasters. Activities included hands-on experiences like calligraphy and haiku writing.

Participant Experiences

Participants generally reported favorable experiences during the program. One student from Hong Kong indicated that the opportunity to learn Japanese was enhanced by the friendliness of Tohoku University students. A peer from Thailand echoed similar sentiments, noting that the presence of buddies facilitated practice in public settings.

Cultural Workshops

Cultural workshops featured activities such as decorating wagashi, a traditional Japanese confection, and wearing yukata, a type of traditional summer clothing. Despite cold weather conditions, participants enjoyed taking photographs while dressed in yukata.

Historical Insights

A significant number of participants hailed from East Asia, which led to a visit to the original lecture hall of Lu Xun, a notable Chinese writer and one of the first international students at Tohoku University in 1904. A student from China expressed particular interest in the exhibition detailing Lu Xun’s life in Sendai.

Field Trips

Additionally, students went on a field trip to Nobiru beach and the Disaster Recovery Memorial Museum, where they gained insights into the impacts of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, as well as visiting Matsushima Bay, recognized for its scenic beauty. A South Korean student shared that the experience enhanced her understanding of the disaster’s effects on local communities.

Program Conclusion

On the concluding day of the program, students presented their experiences, emphasizing improvements in their language skills and sharing memorable moments. A German student commented on the program’s effective combination of urban exploration and personal connections, describing it as valuable.

Transformative Opportunities

Some participants characterized the TUJP as a life-changing opportunity. One student from Indonesia mentioned it was her first experience traveling abroad independently, while another from Germany noted a successful adjustment from initial homesickness, attributing her ease to the welcoming environment and engaging activities.

Future of TUJP

Originally a summer program, TUJP has now expanded to include multiple sessions throughout the year due to increasing interest. Additional information regarding future TUJP sessions and other exchange programs available at Tohoku University can be found through the Global Learning Centre’s website.
