USM and UM Collaborate to Enhance Research and Community Engagement in Surabaya
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) have expanded their academic partnership and commitment to sustainability through a Global Outreach Programme, which involved students, faculty, and the local community in Indonesia. This collaboration was highlighted during an initiative that took place from November 30 to December 5, 2024, organized by final-year students from USM’s Building Engineering Technology Programme.
Objectives of the Programme
The programme aimed to enhance academic collaboration, cultural exchange, and community involvement. Participants visited significant locations including Surabaya, Bromo, and Malang, which contributed to a deeper understanding of international built environment contexts and sustainability practices.
Final-Year Project Colloquium
A key event in the programme was the Final-Year Project (FYP) Colloquium, where students from both universities presented their research findings and received feedback from academic panels. This experience not only developed their presentation and collaboration skills but also encouraged the formation of future research partnerships.
University Social Responsibility Initiative
Additionally, participants took part in a University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative that involved the installation of Biopori Infiltration Holes, intended to facilitate organic waste composting. This initiative aimed to educate students and the local community on sustainable waste management and environmental conservation.
Comparative Guest Lectures
The programme also included guest lectures from members of USM’s Building Engineering Technology department, comparing construction technologies in Malaysia and Indonesia. This component promoted innovation and teamwork among students, enabling them to critically assess various strategies within the built environment and prepare them to tackle challenges in the global industry.
Conclusion
The outreach initiative underscores USM’s dedication to experiential learning and comprehensive student development, ensuring that graduates are equipped to meet the demands of the industry while contributing positively to society.
USM acknowledged the hospitality and collaboration of Universitas Negeri Malang, emphasizing that such initiatives reinforce academic partnerships and generate opportunities for future research, sustainability projects, and cultural exchanges, benefiting both institutions and their respective communities.
