UNAIR Launches Indonesia’s First European Union (EU) Centre for Academic Collaboration

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has established Indonesia’s first European Union (EU) Centre aimed at fostering academic collaboration. The launch took place on November 21, 2024, during a ceremony at the ASEEC Tower on the UNAIR Dharmawangsa-B Campus, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih and EU Ambassador to Indonesia H.E. Denis Chaibi.

Framework for Academic and Non-Academic Partnerships

The MoU outlines a framework designed to enhance both academic and non-academic partnerships between the university and the EU. The inauguration event included seminars focused on the collaborative opportunities available through the EU-UNAIR partnership, alongside discussions regarding research initiatives linked to EURAXESS and Erasmus+ scholarship programs. Attendees also enjoyed cultural performances representing the diverse traditions of Indonesia and Europe.

Purpose of the EU Centre

The newly established EU Centre at UNAIR is intended to facilitate academic cooperation by promoting a deeper understanding of the EU’s institutions, policies, and values. The Centre aims to benefit students, academics, and the public by providing access to publications, resources, and information relevant to cultural and academic exchanges.

UNAIR’s Vision for Global Engagement

This initiative is in line with UNAIR’s broader vision to enhance global engagement and equip students with the resources necessary for success in an increasingly interconnected world. Currently, UNAIR has established 57 active partnerships with 45 educational institutions across 20 EU member states, and the new Centre seeks to strengthen these connections while pursuing further collaborations with the EU and its member states.

Future Programs and Initiatives

Looking ahead, the Centre plans to conduct various programs, including lectures, seminars, workshops, cultural festivals, and competitions, all with the goal of enhancing ties between Indonesia and the European Union and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Commitment to Peace and Sustainable Development

H.E. Denis Chaibi emphasized the commitment shared by Indonesia and the EU toward promoting peace and sustainable development amidst diversity. The EU Centre is expected to empower Indonesian youth and the academic community by providing valuable information on student exchange programs, scholarships, internships, and research collaboration opportunities.
