UMY Doctoral Research Examines State–Muhammadiyah Dynamics in Environmental Legal Politics

A doctoral dissertation at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) has explored the relationship between the state and Muhammadiyah in addressing Indonesia’s growing ecological challenges. The research, presented by Dr. Muhammad Wahdini, S.H., M.H., examined how environmental crises are shaped not only by ecological damage but also by legal and political approaches to natural resource management.

Presented during the Open Doctoral Promotion Session of UMY’s Doctoral Programme in Islamic Politics–Political Science on July 18, 2026, the dissertation titled “Dialectics of State Authority and Muhammadiyah in Ecological Legal Politics in Indonesia” introduced new perspectives on the interaction between government institutions and civil society.

Wahdini’s study revealed that the relationship between the state and Muhammadiyah extends beyond criticism and policy contestation, evolving toward dialogue and reconciliation. While the state holds authority in establishing environmental regulations, Muhammadiyah contributes as a civil society organisation by promoting ecological awareness through religious and humanitarian perspectives.

The research highlighted Muhammadiyah’s long-standing commitment to environmental issues, including efforts to promote ecological values and advocate for sustainable policies. Through the concept of prophetic ecological legal politics, the dissertation proposes a balanced approach that integrates economic development, environmental protection, and ethical considerations.

The findings emphasise the importance of collaboration between government and civil society in creating environmental policies that support sustainable development and public welfare.
