Macao and Hong Kong Universities Launch Joint Laboratory for Embodied Intelligence and PhD Program

The University of Macau (UM) and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have signed an agreement to create a joint laboratory dedicated to Robotics and Embodied Intelligence. This partnership represents the first initiative of its kind that is co-funded by both Macao and Hong Kong and was officially announced on February 12, 2026.
Establishment of a Dual PhD Program
In conjunction with the establishment of the laboratory, the two institutions have introduced a dual PhD program that involves joint supervision from faculty members of both universities. This development is seen as a notable step forward in their collaboration on advanced technologies and the development of high-level talent.
Aims and Objectives of the Joint Laboratory
The Rector of UM, Song Yonghua, indicated that the joint laboratory aims to utilize UM’s strengths in interdisciplinary research, artificial intelligence, and engineering in conjunction with PolyU’s expertise in applied science and engineering applications. The primary goal is to enhance fundamental research while also promoting technology transfer in innovative areas, including intelligent robotics and embodied artificial intelligence.
Collaboration and Impact
President Teng Jin-Guang of PolyU noted that the establishment of the laboratory and the PhD program provides a strong framework for collaboration, enabling interdisciplinary teams from both universities to undertake significant research, address emerging challenges in transformative technologies, and accelerate the application of research findings for the benefit of Hong Kong, Macao, and the wider region.
