Curtin Malaysia Students Experience Conservation and Tourism at Miri Crocodile Farm

Students from the Faculty of Business at Curtin University Malaysia recently engaged in an educational field trip to the Miri Crocodile Farm in Kuala Baram. The initiative was designed to improve their understanding of wildlife conservation and tourism by offering practical experiences that extend beyond the classroom setting.

Trip Overview

The trip was led by Dr. Fayrene Chieng, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, and Dr. Ho Jie Min, Discipline Lead for Marketing and Tourism Programmes. Participants had the opportunity to observe the wildlife attractions in Northern Sarawak and learn about the farm’s functions in both conservation and tourism, focusing on how these two areas can effectively coexist.

Wildlife Exploration

During their visit, students explored various wildlife species and gained knowledge regarding sustainable wildlife tourism and park management practices. Many attendees reported that the field trip was not only academically enriching but also provided a welcome respite from their studies, enhancing their appreciation for Sarawak’s biodiversity and the significance of wildlife attractions to the region’s tourism industry.

Importance of Experiential Learning

Dr. Chieng highlighted the importance of experiential learning, indicating that it can effectively connect students with the industries they will enter after graduation. This method raises awareness about environmental sustainability and helps develop practical skills relevant to future careers.

Broader Commitment

The field trip is part of Curtin University’s broader commitment to delivering industry-linked and field-based learning experiences that prepare graduates for careers in tourism, environmental management, and related fields.
