University of Nottingham Malaysia Marks 25 Years of Impact and Excellence in Education

The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its evolution as an influential institution within the Malaysian higher education sector. The anniversary theme, “Building a Legacy of Impact, Together,” reflected UNM’s ongoing commitment to academic and research excellence, while also recognizing the contributions of individuals and narratives that have played a role in establishing the university as a global academic leader.

To commemorate this occasion, UNM hosted a variety of events, including exhibitions, guest speaker presentations, and performances aimed at highlighting the university’s contributions to Malaysia’s educational landscape. Since its founding in 2000 with an initial cohort of 89 students, UNM has expanded into a vibrant academic institution currently serving over 4,000 students from more than 70 countries.

Key Achievements and Economic Impact

Since its establishment, UNM has produced over 18,000 alumni, with nearly all 2024 graduates either securing employment, pursuing further studies, or engaging in skill development programs. Graduates from UNM are noted for being sought after by major global organizations, such as Ernst & Young (EY), Intel, IBM, Google, and Amazon.

The economic impact of UNM from 2015 to 2024 is estimated at RM30.5 billion, which encompasses institutional expenditure, student spending, and job creation. The earning potential for UNM graduates is reported to be up to double that of other local graduates. In 2024, the university’s research and knowledge exchange initiatives were projected to generate an economic impact of RM73 million and secured 70 new research grants totaling RM16 million.

Additionally, from 2020 to 2025, UNM awarded RM87 million in scholarships to over 2,300 students, with provisions made for refugees, members of the Penan community, and high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds.

Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, recognized the university’s contributions, stating that UNM has made a notable impact on both local and international students and the broader research community.

UNM attributes its achievements to a focus on resilience, ambition, and student-centered education, establishing itself as a leader in research-led education with a global outlook. As it reflects on its history, the university aims to continue inspiring future leaders and changemakers.

Professor David FitzPatrick, Provost and CEO of UNM, remarked on the significance of the anniversary, emphasizing the university’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and promoting innovation for the next 25 years and beyond.

As the first British university to establish a campus outside the UK, UNM has set standards for high-quality and internationally recognized education, continually collaborating with industry and government partners to strengthen Malaysia’s position as an educational hub.
