Prof. Dato’ Ir Dr Abu Bakar Jaafar Receives 2024 Uehara Prize for Leadership in Renewable Energy

Prof. Dato’ Ir Dr. Abu Bakar Jaafar has been awarded the 2024 Uehara Prize in recognition of his contributions to the field of renewable energy, specifically in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology. This accolade was presented during the 10th International Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Symposium held on December 10, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The award was conferred by Ts. Dr. Sathiabama T. Thirugnana, Director of the UTM Ocean Thermal Energy Centre.

Contributions to Renewable Energy

As the founder and a Research Fellow at UTM OTEC, Prof. Jaafar has been a prominent advocate for environmental sustainability and renewable energy solutions. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and a Ph.D. in Marine Geography from the University of Hawaii. His research journey began in 1975 with studies on solar energy conversion to hydrogen, laying the foundation for his enduring commitment to renewable energy.

Leadership in Environmental Policy

From 1990 to 1995, Prof. Jaafar served as Malaysia’s Director-General of the Department of Environment, where he implemented progressive environmental policies. He has also been re-elected three times to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, which is connected with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, highlighting his influence in international maritime law.

Establishment of the Ocean Thermal Energy Centre

In 2013, under his leadership, UTM established the Ocean Thermal Energy Centre, marking a pivotal movement toward renewable energy innovation within Malaysia. His initiatives have included the SATREPS-OTEC program, which facilitated the introduction of advanced hybrid OTEC technology to Malaysia and promoted large-scale renewable energy projects.

Legislative Impact and Investments

In 2024, the Sabah State Assembly passed legislative amendments recognizing OTEC as a renewable energy source, which could potentially attract initial investments estimated at USD 2.25 billion, a change attributed to Prof. Jaafar’s advocacy.

Recognition and Awards

The Uehara Prize recognizes Prof. Jaafar’s dedication to advancing sustainability through OTEC technology and acknowledges his influence on the global renewable energy sector. His accolades include the 2023 World Renewable Energy Network Pioneer Award, as well as honorary doctorates from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu and the University of Newcastle.
