Tsinghua University Student Supercomputing Team Claims Championship at SC24 Competition
Tsinghua University’s Student Supercomputing Team has secured the championship title at the SC24 Student Cluster Competition held in Atlanta, Georgia. This marks the team’s 18th victory in the three major international student supercomputing contests.
Competition Overview
The SC24 finals included participation from 11 teams representing seven countries and regions. Competitors engaged in a 47-hour challenge requiring the design and assembly of custom computing clusters under a power constraint of 4.5 kW. The competition evaluated performance through multiple benchmarks, such as LINPACK, MLPerf, and NPB, as well as scientific applications including the ICON Weather and Climate Model and NAMD simulation. Participants also faced a reproducibility challenge focused on dataflow lifecycle analysis and an unexpected task related to cat recognition.
Team Preparation
Preparation for the competition began months in advance, with the Tsinghua team committing significant time during the summer to rigorous training and collaborative development. Despite facing challenges such as jet lag and unfamiliar hardware during the finals, the team sustained strong performance, ultimately leading to their victory.
Champion Team Composition
The championship team consisted of six undergraduate students: Yang Kai from Zhili College and Li Yifan, Xue Zhiyu, Yang Yuqing, Wang Yucheng, and Shi Chengyu from the Department of Computer Science and Technology. Technical support was provided by doctoral students Chen Shengqi, Zhai Mingshu, Zhang Runqing, and Shan Jingbo. Faculty members Dr. Han Wentao, Dr. Jin Yuyang, and Professor Zhai Jidong supervised the team, with further assistance from Tsinghua’s Zhuiguang Innovation Program, which supports student research and development initiatives.
Global Recognition
The SC Student Cluster Competition is recognized as one of the leading global supercomputing contests, alongside the ISC Student Cluster Competition and the ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge.
