Hokudai Raspberry: A New Hope for Domestic Raspberry Cultivation at Hokkaido University

Researchers and students at Hokkaido University have collaborated with local farmers in Yoichi Town to create the Hokudai Raspberry, originating from the university’s experimental farm. This initiative seeks to reduce Japan’s significant reliance on imported raspberries, with over 90% of raspberries sold in the country currently sourced from abroad.

Establishment of Yoichi Orchard

Established in 1912, Yoichi Orchard has focused on research related to various fruits, including raspberries. Despite their popularity in Japanese desserts, domestic raspberry production has faced limitations due to climatic conditions that make the fruit susceptible to diseases. In response to this challenge, Professor Yoichiro Hoshino initiated a research project in 2007 aimed at developing raspberry cultivars suited for Hokkaido’s environment.

Advancements in Raspberry Cultivation

The research team engaged in comprehensive cross-pollination experiments to enhance both flavor and cultivation ease. Their work has resulted in four distinct raspberry lines that show disease resistance while also offering appealing taste and appearance. Notably, these raspberries are characterized by a twice-bearing trait, which allows for two harvests per year, enhancing their economic viability for local farmers.

Feedback from Local Farmers

Local farmer Keiji Sunagawa has observed the notable aroma and sweetness of the Hokudai Raspberry. He has also highlighted the practical benefits of the plant’s manageable height, which facilitates easier harvesting. Currently, Hokudai Raspberries are available for purchase through Japan Airlines’ online shop, broadening their market reach.

Culinary Innovations

In addition to being sold directly, the Hokudai Raspberry is being incorporated into local culinary creations. The Kurumi-no-ki bakery, for example, uses the raspberries in products such as the Raspberry & Chocolate Muffin, which has received favorable reviews from customers.

Trademark and Future Endeavors

Trademarked in 2022, the Hokudai Raspberry exemplifies the successful integration of academic research and agricultural practice. Ongoing initiatives aim to promote this unique fruit further, providing benefits to the local economy and offering consumers a quality, domestically-produced option.

Hokkaido University’s Broader Commitment

Hokkaido University has also developed various products under its brand, including Hokudai Milk and Hokudai Trout, reinforcing its commitment to utilizing research for regional and agricultural advancement.
