Villa College Psychology Students Foster Intergenerational Learning Through “Irudheyvy” Community Initiative

Psychology students at Villa College organised “Irudheyvy,” a community engagement event that brought together more than 100 older adults at Isravvehinge Naadhee. The initiative served as a voluntary outreach effort designed to promote meaningful interaction between younger and older generations through shared activities, conversation, and cultural exchange.
The event was shaped by a strong spirit of volunteerism, with students dedicating their time and effort to create a meaningful experience beyond the classroom. Their involvement highlighted the role of student-led initiatives in strengthening community wellbeing and fostering civic responsibility.
A key focus of “Irudheyvy” was intergenerational connection. The programme created a space where elders and students could interact on equal terms, sharing stories, experiences, and companionship in a relaxed setting. This exchange offered mutual learning, with students gaining valuable life insights while elders enjoyed active engagement with younger participants.
Activities were rooted in Maldivian traditions, including games such as fas oh, ovvalhu gondi, roanu veshun, and fangi vinun, alongside storytelling sessions. Creative and interactive exercises further encouraged participation, making the event both culturally meaningful and socially engaging.
Overall, “Irudheyvy” demonstrated how experiential learning and community service can enrich academic education while strengthening social bonds.
