SJTU and Monash University Launch Global Immersion Guarantee Program for 2025-2026

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and Monash University have announced the launch of the 2025–2026 Global Immersion Guarantee (GIG) Program. This initiative is set to take place at SJTU’s Xuhui Campus and aims to provide a two-week immersive learning experience in Shanghai for over 320 Monash undergraduate students between November 2025 and February 2026.
Focus on Sustainable Development
The GIG program is centered around Sustainable Development, facilitating collaborations among faculty and students from both institutions. The program will feature in-depth discussions on global governance and public policy. An opening ceremony, attended by representatives from SJTU and Monash University, marked the program’s initiation. Qian Wang, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Division at SJTU, emphasized the importance of the partnership formed in 2019 in cultivating globally minded students.
Integration of Academic Learning and Cultural Exchange
Yingjie Wei, Vice Dean of the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at SJTU, noted that the GIG program is designed to integrate academic learning with cultural exchange and practical engagement. This structure is intended to lay the groundwork for future collaborative efforts. Pathcharin Chen, the in-country coordinator from Monash University, acknowledged SJTU’s careful preparation for the program, highlighting the potential for students to gain meaningful insights during their stay in Shanghai.
Curriculum Highlights
The curriculum developed by SJTU-SIPA will include a mix of academic lectures and cultural experiences. Students will attend lectures on various topics such as cross-cultural communication, renewable energy, and the role of government in low-carbon development, which will provide insight into China’s governance model. Cultural components will feature workshops aimed at fostering appreciation for both Eastern and Western traditions, including Chinese calligraphy and ink wash painting.
Field Visits and Practical Experience
Moreover, the program will incorporate strategic field visits aimed at observing current trends in innovation. Students will have opportunities to explore renewable energy facilities, electric vehicle production sites, and urban waste management systems, addressing challenges commonly faced by large cities.
Enhancing Understanding of China’s Landscape
Participation in the GIG program will allow Monash University students to leverage SJTU’s extensive resources and expertise, enhancing their understanding of China’s academic environment and technological landscape. This partnership underscores SJTU’s commitment to advancing global education and its involvement in international dialogues on sustainable development.
