2025 Milestones: Kuala Lumpur University of Science and Technology Overview

Kuala Lumpur University of Science and Technology (KLUST) has announced key developments as it prepares for 2025. The university is poised for significant advancements following a handover ceremony held on April 23, 2026, where operational rights were transferred to Star Teenagers International Group. This transaction, which grants a 90% equity stake under the Belt and Road Initiative, also marks the official transition from its former name, Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur, to Kuala Lumpur University of Science and Technology.
21st Convocation Ceremony
On May 24, KLUST held its 21st Convocation Ceremony, attended by approximately 1,000 graduates from over 30 countries. This event was notable as it was the first convocation under the new leadership of the Star Teenagers International Group, emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity in the awarded degrees.
Formal Renaming and Strategic Shift
A formal renaming of the institution took place on June 25, aligning with a new focus on technology advancement and internationalization. This strategic shift aims to position KLUST as an application-oriented research university that integrates digital technology and artificial intelligence, with aspirations to serve as a regional hub for technological education and innovation in Southeast Asia.
Back-to-Campus Day
In July, the university hosted its first Back-to-Campus Day, which featured an Expert Talk Series themed “Setting Sail Under the Starlight.” During this event, Chairman Chen Xiaoyun underscored the importance of cultivating elite talent necessary for future innovations.
ASEAN–China Artificial Intelligence Conference
KLUST further contributed to the academic community by co-hosting the first ASEAN–China Artificial Intelligence Conference in September. This event brought together leaders from government, academia, and industry to discuss the future of AI development in the region. During the conference, Chairman Chen Xiaoyun was recognized with the ASEAN–China Outstanding Contribution Award for his contributions to international educational cooperation.
China–ASEAN Transportation AI Innovation Cooperation Centre
Additionally, KLUST played a role in establishing the China–ASEAN Transportation AI Innovation Cooperation Centre, which involves collaboration among 60 universities and enterprises, focusing on advancements in smart transportation management and autonomous driving technologies.
International Partnerships
The university solidified its commitment to international partnerships during the QS Higher Ed Summit in November by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Hansung University, aimed at enhancing global academic collaborations.
Academic Programs and Investment
Currently, KLUST offers 28 undergraduate, 16 master’s, and 10 doctoral programs. The institution is also making strides in infrastructure and educational quality, with a recent investment of RMB 30 million designated for the initiation of the Star Teenagers AI Artificial Intelligence Innovation Practice Centre and other campus enhancement projects.
