Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs Visits Tohoku University: Strengthening Global Collaboration on Ethical Challenges

On November 11, a delegation from the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs (CCEIA), led by President Dr. Joel Rosenthal, visited Tohoku University. The delegation engaged in discussions with university executives, including President Teiji Tominaga.

Recognition of Ethical Leadership

President Tominaga recognized the CCEIA’s dedication to developing future leaders capable of addressing global ethical challenges. He noted that the Council’s goals align with Tohoku University’s commitment to tackling societal issues through innovative research, guided by its philosophy of “Practice-oriented Research and Education.”

Emphasis on Education and Cooperation

During the visit, Dr. Rosenthal referred to the foundational principles of Andrew Carnegie, emphasizing the significance of “Education” and “International Cooperation.” He highlighted the importance of prioritizing values and ethics in modern society and suggested that advancements in technologies—including artificial intelligence and bioethics—should be utilized for the benefit of all. Dr. Rosenthal expressed confidence in Tohoku University’s ability to take a prominent role in addressing ethical challenges in a rapidly changing world.

Tour of Research Facilities

After the meeting, the delegation toured the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) and the NanoTerasu facility, which specializes in next-generation synchrotron radiation research.

Potential for Collaboration

This visit could lead to enhanced collaboration between Tohoku University and the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.
