UTB-STE Connect 2025: Exploring Conferences and Featured Events at Universiti Teknologi Brunei

The UTB Science, Technology, and Engineering Connect (STE Connect) 2025 commenced with afternoon sessions at the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics, following the official opening ceremony at the International Convention Centre (ICC).
BICET 2025 Overview
The 10th Brunei International Conference on Engineering and Technology (BICET 2025) initiated with remarks from Yang Mulia Dr. Tan Soon Jiann, Chairperson of BICET 2025. A keynote address was delivered by Yang Mulia Professor Ir. Dr. Sharul Kamal Abdul Rahim of the Wireless Communication Centre at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, who discussed the topic of “Beamforming and Antenna Arrays for Smart City Communication Systems.”
Civil Engineering Track
In the Civil Engineering Track, chaired by Yang Mulia Dr. Geetha Karthi and Yang Mulia Pg Dr. Noor Muneerah Pg Hj Jeludin, five papers were presented on various topics, including multi-lane roundabout capacity in Brunei, rainfall-induced slope failures, shallow foundation settlement optimization, and integrated landfill leachate treatment using chemical oxidation techniques.
Electrical and Electronic Engineering Track
The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Track, led by Yang Mulia Dr. Sheik Mohammed Sulthan and Yang Mulia Dr. Suganthi Saravana Balaji, featured five papers that examined classroom air conditioning temperatures, solar photovoltaic inverter placement, grid-tied PV system operations, AC breakdown testing of insulation oils, and classroom lighting system modeling that integrates natural and artificial light.
Mechanical Engineering Track
The Mechanical Engineering Track, chaired by Yang Mulia Dr. Asad Khalid and Yang Mulia Awang Murhamdillah, encompassed discussions of six papers, covering topics like machine learning predictions for turbulent kinetic energy, photonics-based engineering education focused on sustainability, real-time monitoring of solar food dehydrators, drying efficiency for tropical fruits, tool life in machining titanium alloys, and CFD-based design optimization of Pelton turbine buckets.
Chemical and Energy Engineering Track
The Chemical and Energy Engineering Track, led by Yang Mulia Professor Sivakumar Manickam and Yang Mulia Dr. Wendy Pei Qin Ng, presented six papers focused on polymer-carbon nanocomposites for EMI shielding, the valorization of rice husk as a bioadsorbent, fly ash effects on cement composition, plasmonic nanoparticle inks for authentication, absorption tower design, and modeling safety behavior predictors among engineering students.
Day 1 Highlights
Overall, Day 1 of BICET 2025 featured 22 research papers, facilitating academic exchange and practical applications across the fields of civil, electrical and electronic, mechanical, and chemical and energy engineering.
ACIIS 2025 Opening
Simultaneously, the 7th International Conference on Applied Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (ACIIS) 2025 commenced with opening remarks from Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Sharul Tazrajiman bin Haji Tajuddin, Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics. Keynote speakers included Yang Mulia Professor Steven Wong and Yang Mulia Professor Toru Ishida, along with an invited talk from a representative of META, discussing ethical and inclusive approaches in artificial intelligence applications.
Research Presentation Sessions
Two parallel presentation sessions presented six research papers addressing topics such as hybrid KELM-LSTM frameworks for solar power forecasting, smartphone-based facial recognition for classroom attendance, sentiment mining for personalized tourism marketing, and real-time human detection on Android devices using TensorFlow Lite.
ICBMIS 2025 Overview
The 3rd International Conference on Business, Management and Information Systems (ICBMIS) 2025 commenced with opening remarks by Yang Mulia Dr. Fahmi Ibrahim, followed by a keynote address from Yang Mulia Associate Professor Dr. Nomahaza Mahadi on strategies for enhancing creativity, agility, and resilience in business.
ICBMIS Tracks
Track I focused on Management, AI, and Information Systems, chaired by Yang Mulia Associate Professor Dr. Mohamed Saleem Haja Nazmudeen and Yang Mulia Hajah Siti Eddyilahwati binti Haji Suhaili, presenting two papers related to human resource development and brand equity in higher education. Track II, examining AI Applications, Analytics, and Ethics, was chaired by Yang Mulia Dr. Heru Susanto and Yang Mulia Pengiran Ida Nurul-Fitri binti Pengiran Haji Kahar, and featured three papers discussing the relationship between smartphone addiction and student health, social media engagement analysis, and AI-driven adaptive project management systems.
ICABF 2025 Commencement
The 2nd International Conference on Agrotechnology, Beverage and Food (ICABF 2025) began with remarks from Yang Mulia Dr. Namasivayam Navaranjan and featured a keynote address by Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Shahrul Razid Sarbini of Universiti Putra Malaysia. The first oral session, focusing on Food Safety and Regulations, presented six papers on topics such as preservative efficacy in orange juice and food safety culture in service establishments.
ICCArTe 2025 Commentary
The 2nd International Conference on Creative Arts, Design and Technology (ICCArTe 2025) commenced with comments from Professor Yulfian Aminanda, Chairperson of ICCArTe and InHERIT 2025, and included discussions on the integration of creative arts, design, and technology for sustainable and culturally informed futures.
Featured Events
Additionally, two featured events were highlighted on the first day of UTB-STE Connect 2025. The 1st Global Conference on Industrial, Materials, and Manufacturing (GCIMM 2025), organized by the Department of Materials, Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and hosted by UTB’s Faculty of Engineering, showcased over 20 research papers on various industry-related topics.
Moreover, the ASEAN Sustainable Ready for Industry 5.0 Programme (ASEAN SRI 5.0) was organized by UTB’s Green Technology and Sustainable Development Centre in collaboration with OIC-COMSTECH. This forum focused on the integration of science, technology, and innovation with environmental, social, and economic resilience, featuring discussions led by government officials, industry experts, and academics.
Conclusion of Day 1
The first day of the forum concluded with presentations on ESG-driven technology and a high-level panel discussion regarding the interplay between Industry 5.0 and ESG concepts. Day 1 of UTB-STE Connect 2025 underscored academic excellence, industrial innovation, and sustainability initiatives. The program will continue on October 21 and 22, 2025, offering further avenues for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
