“Polytechnic University of the Philippines: Excellence in Education and Research”

Students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) participated in the 5th International Symposium and 95th General Assembly of the Philippine Society of Parasitology (PSP), held from July 1 to 4, 2025, at the Camp John Hay Convention Center in Baguio City.

Annual Parasitology Symposium

This annual symposium convenes local and international scientists, educators, researchers, and students to examine current studies in the field of parasitology. The theme for this year’s event was “Old Dreams, New Visions – Expanding Pathways to Global Health: Opportunity, Collaboration, and Education.”

PUP Biology Majors Representing the Microbiology Track

Participants representing the Microbiology Track included PUP biology majors Summer B. Badiola, Chynna Miccah Worth N. Barican, and Franzelle C. Caeg. Under the supervision of Professors Jhunel G. Vinarao and John Leonard R. Chan from the College of Science, the team presented their research focused on public health.

Award-Winning Research Presentation

Their project, entitled “Molecular Characterization and Immunoinformatics Design of a Multi-epitope Peptide Vaccine Targeting the Tetraspanin-1 Protein from Philippine Schistosoma japonicum Isolate,” was awarded First Place in the Undergraduate Oral Presentation category. The research addressed significant challenges in vaccine development for schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease that affects millions in endemic areas, including the Philippines.

PUP’s Commitment to Health and Research

This recognition underscores PUP’s involvement in national scientific discussions aimed at enhancing health and parasitology research. It also showcases the commitment of emerging Filipino researchers to address pressing public health issues through innovative means.

Contributions to Sustainable Development Goals

The success of this research contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), demonstrating PUP’s dedication to conducting research that impacts both national and global challenges.

Ongoing Commitment to Scientific Advancement

The achievements of these biology students reflect the university’s ongoing commitment to advancing scientific knowledge for societal benefit.
