Over 160 Students and Teachers Explore Innovation at Curtin Malaysia’s EduXperience: STEAM Carnival

More than 160 students and teachers from SMK Luar Bandar Miri engaged in the EduXperience: STEAM Carnival, an outreach event organized by Curtin University Malaysia in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Miri Branch. The event occurred from 9 am to 2 pm and was designed to create an interactive learning environment focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).
Engaging Workshops and Competitions
Participants explored various STEAM concepts through workshops, competitions, and demonstrations. Activities included a STEAM Fair tailored for lower secondary students and a ‘Battle of the Builders’ competition open to all student levels. Senior students took part in the SuCCESS Math Workshop aimed at enhancing problem-solving skills, while Form Six students participated in a Level Up Leadership Workshop focused on teamwork and leadership development. Teachers had the opportunity to attend sessions on stress management and financial planning, reflecting the event’s comprehensive educational approach.
Battle of the Builders
The Battle of the Builders served as a significant feature where students utilized engineering principles and teamwork to design and compete in building projects, with facilitation from IEM and the IEM Curtin Malaysia Student Section. Additionally, students from Curtin Malaysia’s Health, Safety, and Environment program raised awareness about environmental issues through an informational booth that stressed the importance of sustainability.
Community Participation and Feedback
The event involved participation from 33 staff members of Curtin Malaysia, 21 students, and two representatives from IEM, alongside the teachers from SMK Luar Bandar Miri. Jameson Malang, the Organizing Chairperson and Teaching Fellow from Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education, noted that the carnival aimed to inspire a passion for STEAM subjects and promote resilience, leadership, and environmental awareness. Feedback from students indicated a strong interest in future similar events, as highlighted by Co-organizing Chairpersons Eliane Choo Yuan Syn and Imelda Anak Baran from SMK Luar Bandar Miri.
