Central Mindanao University Hosts Hydrobiology Symposium and Training Workshop

Central Mindanao University (CMU) recently hosted a Hydrobiology Symposium and Training Workshop on June 23, 2025, at the College of Arts and Sciences Auditorium. The event, organized by the Office of International Relations, aimed to bring together experts, educators, practitioners, students, and stakeholders in the biological sciences to exchange knowledge and encourage collaboration in hydrobiological research throughout the Philippines.
Opening Remarks
During the opening remarks, CMU President Dr. Eballe highlighted the significance of the symposium in furthering the university’s mission to promote knowledge and foster international cooperation in research and education. He noted that such gatherings are essential for advancing academic initiatives.
Featured Presentations
The symposium featured presentations from prominent researchers affiliated with the Russian Academy of Sciences, including Dr. Evgeny Gusev and Dr. Nikita Martynenko, who addressed topics such as Aquatic Ecosystem Diversity Utilizing e-DNA and Metabarcoding. Additional discussions included the Diversity of Cladocera by Dr. Petr Garibian and the Diversity of Algae led by Dr. Alisa Neplykhina.
Importance of Aquatic Ecosystems
Dr. Regie Y. Dela Cruz, Director of the Institute of Biological Sciences, acknowledged the contributions of the speakers and underscored the importance of aquatic ecosystems for global biodiversity, climate stability, sustainable development, and food security. She emphasized the necessity of collaboration in addressing significant environmental challenges.
Attracting Diverse Participation
The event attracted participation from faculty, staff, and students across various colleges at CMU, along with representatives from Bukidnon State University, Davao Medical School Foundation, Davao Doctors College, and the Philippine Science High School SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus. The symposium was made possible through the collaborative efforts of several university units, including the Office of the Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension, the Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao, and the Institute of Biological Sciences.
