IIT Delhi’s Commitment to Student Mental Well-being and Welfare

IIT Delhi has recognized the importance of mental wellness among its student body and has initiated several measures aimed at addressing this important issue. The institute is focused on improving the mental health and welfare of its students through continuous evaluation and enhancement of its support systems.
Ongoing Dialogues with Students
In order to better understand student concerns and develop effective solutions, the administration has started ongoing dialogues with students. This initiative seeks to create a supportive environment for mental health by incorporating feedback from various sources.
Formation of Expert Committee
Following the recent untimely deaths of students, IIT Delhi formed an expert committee to review campus processes and the overall atmosphere affecting student well-being. The committee, which comprised internal stakeholders and external mental health experts, focused on systemic challenges including competitive pressures, issues related to the entrance examination system, and social biases within the academic setting.
Identifying Factors Contributing to Mental Health Challenges
The committee identified several factors contributing to mental health challenges, many of which had already been acknowledged by the Institute. Although some measures were previously implemented to address these concerns, the committee highlighted the necessity for enhanced and optimized strategies. Their report has also prompted discussions in faculty and Deans’ committee meetings aimed at increasing sensitivity and awareness among faculty and administrative staff regarding student interactions.
Developing a Comprehensive Action Plan
In response to the recommendations from the report and an audit of existing counseling services, IIT Delhi is developing a comprehensive action plan to improve its student support systems. This plan will be presented to the Institute’s Board of Governors, alongside specific proposals for implementing the committee’s recommendations.
Commitment to Tackling Systemic Issues
Understanding that the challenges identified are prevalent across many institutions, IIT Delhi has committed to tackling these systemic issues. The Institute plans to collaborate with other institutions, including various IITs, to engage in national discussions concerning entrance examinations such as the JEE.
Welcoming Feedback from Stakeholders
IIT Delhi is also welcoming feedback and suggestions from the academic community and other stakeholders to further advance its initiatives aimed at improving student mental health.
