UNAIR Enhances Global Recognition Through International Accreditation with UK Assessors

On February 10, 2025, the Faculty of Science and Technology at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) hosted a team of assessors from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) as part of a site visit aimed at evaluating the university’s Chemistry Undergraduate and Master’s programs for international accreditation. This initiative aligns with UNAIR’s broader efforts to enhance its global recognition in the field of chemistry.
Key University Officials in Attendance
The visit was attended by key university officials, including Prof. Dr. Bambang Sektiari Lukiswanto, DEA, Vice Rector for Academic, Student Affairs, and Alumni Affairs; Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, MSi, Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development; and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, SE, MSi, MFin, Vice Rector for Resources. Other notable attendees included Prof. Sukardiman, Apt, MS, Director of Academic Affairs at UNAIR; Prof. Nurul Barizah, SH, LLM, PhD, Chair of UNAIR’s Quality Assurance Board; and Prof. Miratul Khasanah, MSi, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology.
Importance of Global Academic Integration
During the assessment, Prof. Zana Binti Abdullah from RSC emphasized the importance of integrating UNAIR’s chemistry programs with global academic networks. She noted that the evaluative process aimed to enhance the connectivity of chemistry programs around the world, adhering to standards of the UK education system, which could bolster UNAIR’s reputation within the international academic community. The thorough preparations observed at UNAIR were acknowledged as indicative of the university’s commitment to maintaining high educational standards.
Structure of the Accreditation Visit
Prof. Nurul Barizah outlined that the RSC visit comprises multiple stages over two days, involving discussions with university representatives to verify the accuracy of the submitted System Evaluation Report, alongside inspections of laboratories and engagements with faculty, students, and administrative units. She remarked that receiving international accreditation is a crucial strategy for advancing UNAIR’s global academic standing.
Extensive Preparations by the Chemistry Department
As part of the accreditation process, UNAIR’s Chemistry Department has undertaken extensive preparations, which include restructuring the curriculum in line with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles, developing a Self-Assessment Report, and compiling pertinent documentation such as course syllabi and laboratory guidelines.
Future Accreditation Goals
Prof. Barizah expressed hope regarding the outcome of the site visit, indicating that official accreditation from the Royal Society of Chemistry for both undergraduate and graduate programs could be secured by May. Achieving this accreditation would align UNAIR’s educational offerings with those of other institutions recognized for their international standards, particularly those in the UK.
Encouragement for Stakeholder Engagement
Stakeholders and interested parties are encouraged to remain updated on developments and results tied to this accreditation process through UNAIR’s official communications.
