The Official Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Academic Year at the University of South Africa (Unisa) took place on February 12, 2026. The event marked a significant moment as institutional leaders conveyed a renewed focus on an Africa-centered educational vision. The theme for the ceremony was “Reclaiming Africa’s Intellectual Futures for the Next 150 Years and Beyond,” underscoring the university’s commitment to influencing the academic landscape of the continent.

Keynote Address by Dr. Dan Mosia

Dr. Dan Mosia, Chairperson of the Unisa Council, indicated that the theme serves as a developmental marker and emphasizes education’s critical role in generating knowledge, science, and ideas. He highlighted the necessity of decisive leadership in the context of the shifting dynamics within higher education.

Commitment to Transformation

In his address, Mosia reaffirmed the council’s dedication to the transformation of the university and identified governance and financial sustainability as vital indicators of its progress. He reiterated the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, stressing the importance of achieving a clean audit to attract investment for educational initiatives.

Message from Prof. Puleng LenkaBula

Prof. Puleng LenkaBula, Unisa’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, also spoke to attendees, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to elevate the standard of education and student support. She noted her role as the first female leader of the institution, reflecting on the responsibility of leadership to uphold a legacy of justice and support for marginalized communities.

The opening ceremony serves as an annual event designed to unite the university community around shared goals, recognize past achievements and challenges, and outline the strategic direction for the year.
