ITS Advances Modular Autonomous Control Technology for Electric Vehicles

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) is advancing electric vehicle innovation through the development of a modular autonomous control system designed to make self-driving technology more accessible and adaptable. The project is led by Dr Rudy Dikairono ST MT from the ITS Department of Electrical Engineering together with his research team.

Recognising the growing global demand for autonomous mobility, Rudy and his team are developing an intelligent system that can be integrated into existing electric vehicles. Unlike premium vehicles equipped with advanced autonomous features, many mid-range electric cars currently only offer limited Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). ITS aims to provide a more inclusive and affordable autonomous driving solution.

The modular system combines advanced technologies such as Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Global Positioning System (GPS), and digital mapping to enable vehicles to understand their surroundings, determine routes, and navigate independently. The vehicle can operate in both manual and autonomous modes, providing flexibility for users.

Initial trials conducted within the ITS campus environment showed that the system could detect obstacles and respond adaptively to road conditions. Future development will focus on improving safety features, automated speed adjustment, and advanced manoeuvring capabilities.

Beyond automotive applications, the technology also has potential uses in sectors such as agriculture and industry. This innovation supports ITS’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 9 by promoting industrial innovation and smart infrastructure development.
