Professor Ghassan Saed Explores Advances in Personalized Cancer Therapies at School of Medicine Lecture

The School of Medicine hosted a lecture by Honorary Professor Ghassan Saed on the growing role of personalized medicine and gene-based therapies in advancing cancer treatment. The session, titled “Personalized Medicine and Gene-Based Therapies in Cancer Treatment,” explored how genetic analysis and next-generation sequencing (NGS) are transforming the diagnosis and management of cancer.

Professor Saed highlighted how understanding the molecular and genetic characteristics of individual tumors enables doctors to select more targeted treatments, improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. He discussed the importance of identifying genetic mutations, including TP53, BRCA1, and BRCA2 abnormalities, which can influence treatment decisions for different cancer types.

The lecture also examined DNA repair mechanisms, particularly homologous recombination deficiency (HRD), and the use of targeted therapies such as PARP inhibitors for selected patient groups. Professor Saed addressed challenges in cancer care, including treatment resistance, tumor microenvironments, and factors that contribute to cancer progression.

Emerging technologies such as liquid biopsy, CRISPR-based gene editing, immunotherapy, and antibody-drug conjugates were also discussed as promising approaches for improving precision cancer treatment.

Organized by Prof. Asma Basha, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the lecture brought together faculty members and resident physicians as part of the School of Medicine’s activities during the Third Honorary Professors Forum, promoting scientific exchange and collaboration.
