Universiti Malaya Becomes First to Implement Comprehensive Higher Education Quality Excellence Index

Universiti Malaya has been recognised by the Malaysian Book of Records as the first university to implement a comprehensive Higher Education Quality Excellence Index (UMQEI). The recognition was announced during Universiti Malaya’s Quality Day, highlighting its commitment to strengthening institutional quality and continuous improvement.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman stated that UMQEI provides a structured, transparent framework for evaluating institutional performance, enabling data-driven decision-making and accountability. Developed from 2022 and officially implemented in August 2024, the index integrates key national benchmarks, including the Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA).
The initiative also complements achievements by the University of Malaya Medical Centre, which secured full accreditation from the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health. Together, these milestones reflect an integrated quality ecosystem spanning education and healthcare.
Universiti Malaya plans to further enhance UMQEI by expanding its indicators to align with evolving global standards.
