UiTM Faculty of Medicine Enhances Community Health Education on Hypertension in Sungai Buloh

On October 14, 2025, the Department of Pharmacology at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) organized a Community Health Education Programme in collaboration with the Surau Al-Ikhwan Committee in Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh. The focus of the event was to raise awareness about hypertension and the proper use of antihypertensive medications.
Event Overview
Held at Surau Al-Ikhwan, the programme attracted 64 participants from the local community. Faculty members, including Dr. Noor Fahitah Abu Hanipah, Dr. Norhafiza Razali, Dr. Siti Norsyafika Kamarudin, and Dr. Norasikin Ab Azis, led the initiative. The programme aimed to improve health literacy regarding non-communicable diseases, especially the management of hypertension.
Programme Activities
The sessions included health talks, quizzes, and pre-and post-programme assessments to evaluate knowledge acquisition. Topics covered included the identification of hypertension symptoms, associated complications, preventive measures, the importance of medication adherence, appropriate drug storage, and lifestyle changes to reduce health risks.
Knowledge Improvement
Analysis of questionnaires administered both before and after the programme revealed a significant increase in knowledge among participants. Specifically, the understanding that “beta-blockers reduce heart rate” rose from 71% to 82% after the educational sessions.
Importance of Community Engagement
Dr. Noor Fahitah highlighted the importance of community engagement in health education, emphasizing its role in encouraging individuals to take proactive steps toward managing their health. The positive reception of the programme illustrated the need for translating scientific information into practical health practices.
Conclusion
The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which participants expressed appreciation for the clarity and relevance of the topics discussed. This initiative reflects UiTM’s ongoing commitment to community welfare and knowledge dissemination, supporting the university’s mission to cultivate informed and socially responsible citizens through public health education and outreach initiatives.
