Jesselton University College Students Volunteer for Wildlife Conservation at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park

Kota Kinabalu, 17 April 2025 – As part of their ongoing commitment to community service and environmental responsibility, students and staff from Jesselton University College (JUC) participated in a volunteer initiative at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, engaging in a meaningful trash cleanup activity within the park grounds. This initiative, held on April 17, 2025, was organized under JUC’s community engagement program, aiming to promote sustainable practices and awareness among the younger generation.
Far beyond a routine cleanup, the day proved to be a transformative learning experience for many. Volunteers were granted special access to observe the daily operations of the park, interact with the park rangers, and witness firsthand the effort involved in rehabilitating and caring for rescued wildlife. Many were moved by encounters with orangutans, sun bears, and other protected species, deepening their understanding of the urgent need to preserve Sabah’s biodiversity.
“This experience was truly mind-blowing. Not only did we contribute to a cleaner environment, but we also gained a deeper appreciation for the role wildlife sanctuaries play in protecting biodiversity,” shared one of the student volunteers, adding that the visit has inspired many to take a more active role in conservation efforts.
JUC extends its sincere gratitude to the management and staff of Lok Kawi Wildlife Park for the warm hospitality and the opportunity to engage in meaningful conservation work. Such hands-on experiences are a vital part of JUC’s holistic education approach, which combines academic learning with real-world impact.
By integrating sustainability into student development activities, Jesselton University College continues to foster responsible future leaders who are not only academically equipped but also socially and environmentally conscious.
