IPB University Implements Electricity Saving Circular for Campus Efficiency

IPB University has issued a circular to implement measures aimed at reducing electricity consumption across its campus. The communication, directed to department heads within the institution, outlines recommended practices to enhance energy efficiency.

Strategies for Minimizing Electricity Usage

Dr. Alim Setiawan Slamet, the Vice Rector for Resource Resilience and Infrastructure, detailed strategies for minimizing electricity usage. Departments utilizing facilities such as teaching industries, greenhouses, cold storage, and large electric machinery are advised to restrict their operational hours. Income-generating units utilizing these facilities are also expected to cover their own electricity costs.

Restrictions on Elevator Usage

The circular imposes restrictions on elevator usage, instructing that in buildings with two elevators, only one should be operational at a time during the day. Guidelines concerning the use of air conditioning, lighting, and other electrical devices in classrooms, laboratories, and academic spaces have been established as well. These devices are to function according to scheduled activities and should be turned off when not needed.

Air Conditioning Regulations

Air conditioning usage is regulated from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with recommended temperature settings between 23-25°C. Dr. Alim underlined the importance of switching off air conditioning when not required, advocating for the use of natural ventilation where feasible. For rooms with multiple air conditioning units, usage is suggested to be limited to a maximum of 50% of the available units.

Lighting Maintenance

During working hours, lighting in non-academic areas is to be maintained at no more than 50% of standard capacity.

Assignment of Responsibilities

Dr. Alim has called upon unit leaders to assign responsibilities to administrative personnel, supervisors, or technicians to ensure effective implementation of these measures. The Directorate of General and Infrastructure will oversee these initiatives to ensure compliance.

Broader Efficiency Efforts

This circular is part of broader efforts to enhance expenditure efficiency outlined for the fiscal year 2025, in accordance with directives from the Board of Trustees regarding IPB University’s Work Plan and Budget. The efficiency strategies include:

  1. Streamlining expenses for meetings by prioritizing in-office gatherings. Any exceptional activities requiring external arrangements must receive prior approval from the relevant coordinating unit leaders.
  2. Limiting essential official travel to activities directly impacting program outcomes, with travel needing recommendations from the rector or vice rector.
  3. Implementing operational expenditure efficiency measures, including procurement reductions for vehicles, fuel, office supplies, electronics, and uniforms, while reducing overtime work.
  4. Promoting responsible use of utilities, ensuring that they are turned off when not in use.
  5. Restricting capacity-building activities to available budget limits and confining them to the island of Java, utilizing land transportation only.

Conclusion

Through the implementation of these measures, IPB University seeks to support government-imposed budget savings initiatives.
