TU-RAC Empowers Young Minds with Media Literacy Curriculum

Thammasat University Research and Consultancy Institute, or TU-RAC, in collaboration with the Fund for the Development of Safe and Creative Media, has launched a training program aimed at enhancing the capabilities of educators in the media literacy curriculum for primary education. This initiative includes comprehensive media literacy training for Thai teachers, preparing them and educational personnel to effectively conduct teaching in accordance with the competency-based curriculum for media literacy and the use of digital technologies for the creative learning of students, held at the Basil Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, Best Western Plus Vanda Grand Hotel.
The curriculum for media literacy at the primary education level is a collaborative development between TU-RAC and the Safe and Creative Media Development Fund, aimed at equipping students with essential competencies necessary for the 21st century. These competencies include critical thinking skills, communication skills, media literacy, and responsible citizenship. The development is undertaken through a competency-based curriculum focusing on media literacy and various extracurricular activities, under the auspices of the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Thammasat University. This initiative seeks to provide comprehensive media literacy training for Thai teachers to address knowledge gaps and empower them to guide students through the complexities of the media landscape, fostering responsible digital citizenship. Additionally, it prepares students for success in the 21st century, marking a significant step in enhancing the skills required for individuals to thrive in the digital age.
Assistant Professor Dr. Adchara Panthanuwong, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Thammasat University, announced the development of a media literacy curriculum for elementary education, supported by the Safe and Creative Media Development Fund. This initiative involved comprehensive methods, including field visits for data collection, feedback solicitation, and curriculum piloting, all of which received substantial cooperation. The project has fostered the establishment of a collaborative network involving government agencies, educational institutions, and various partners, enabling the effective development and implementation of the curriculum. A detailed training management plan has been created to enhance media literacy skills among Thai teacher leaders across six regions, with training offered both online and in-person. This program aims to equip educators from diverse regions—including the North, South, East, Northeast, and Central—with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully implement the media literacy curriculum, particularly for primary school teachers. The initiative aspires to facilitate the effective integration of the Media Information and Digital Literacy (MIDL) curriculum into educational practices within schools.
