USM Team Clinches Grand Prize at Huawei ICT Competition Innovation Track 2024
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) received the Grand Prize for the Innovation Track at the Huawei ICT Competition Malaysia 2024-2025, with the awards ceremony held on December 12, 2024, in Putrajaya.
Award-Winning Team
The USM team, under the guidance of Dr. Chong Yung Wey from the School of Computer Sciences, included students Lim Miin Ning, Naomi Tham Kah Mun, and Bok Wei Hong. They were selected as winners from a total of 16 awardees across multiple competition tracks, such as Cloud, Network, Computing, and Innovation.
International Representation
As the grand prize winners, the USM team will represent Malaysia at the regional competition scheduled for February 2025, showcasing the nation’s information and communication technology (ICT) talent internationally.
University Commitment to Innovation
Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, Vice-Chancellor of USM, remarked on the importance of this achievement, stating that it reflects the university’s commitment to supporting innovation and improving the employability of its graduates. This win reiterates USM’s status as a prominent institution in technology development.
Event Inauguration
The event was inaugurated by Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, who represented the Higher Education Minister, Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang, Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education, and Datuk Professor Dr. Azlinda Azman, Director-General of Higher Education.
Significance of the Competition
Co-organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., the competition attracted more than 1,200 participants from 40 public and private universities. It serves as a significant platform aimed at nurturing the future generation of ICT leaders in Malaysia.
