Counselling Awareness Month 2024: Mental Health Insights and Strategies for College Students
Counselling Awareness Month 2024 has brought attention to mental health challenges affecting approximately one in five college students. This initiative at INTI International College Penang adopted the theme “Embracing Wellness: Strengthening Mind, Empowering Life” and was conducted from September 2 to October 24, 2024. The campaign featured a series of activities designed to promote resilience and overall well-being among students.
Launch Event and Activities
The campaign was officially launched at the college’s multipurpose hall, with remarks made by YB Wong Yuee Harng, the ADUN of Pengkalan Kota, Pulau Pinang. The opening event included a traditional Malay dance performance by lecturer Rafizi, as well as a forum titled “The Pursuit of Happiness: Why Happiness Matters the Most.” This forum, moderated by Shu Yon Yeoh, a student counselor at the college, featured panel discussions with experts, including Asmar Ahmad, a counselor from LPPKN; Alex Lim Lian Sheng, a clinical psychologist from D’Home; and Sabatiah Imam Abdul Rahman, an autistic therapist from NASOM Butterworth, focusing on the role of happiness in enhancing mental wellness.
Institutional Commitment
Hemalatha Murugiah, Chief Executive of INTI International College Penang, underscored the institution’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for students. She emphasized the importance of seeking help as a vital aspect of personal growth and well-being.
NGO Exhibition and Community Engagement
A notable feature of the month-long initiative was an NGO exhibition that showcased organizations such as Befrienders Penang, D’Home Mental Health Association, NASOM, and Home Dynamics. Attendees were provided with brochures, mental health screenings, and comprehensive information on available support services. Additionally, interactive activities, including Fun Games Happy Minds and food trucks, encouraged student engagement and connection.
Combatting Stigma
Counselor Nazwa Haris elaborated on the importance of the initiative in combatting stigma surrounding mental health. She remarked that Counselling Awareness Month plays a crucial role in helping students recognize that mental health is as critical as academic performance, and that it is acceptable to seek help when needed.
Cultural Shift and Future Activities
The initiative aims to foster a culture of care within the college, encouraging early intervention and continuous support for mental health issues. Upcoming activities will include an International Charity Food Festival to benefit Befrienders Penang.
Community Appreciation
Nazwa Haris acknowledged the community’s involvement, expressing appreciation for the support received during Counselling Awareness Month 2024, which is instrumental in prioritizing mental health within the community.
