USM RCE Penang Engages in Environmental Dialogue with Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry to Foster Youth-Led SDG Initiatives
On November 7, 2024, RCE Penang from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) participated in an international workshop titled “An Intellectual Discourse on Environmental Issues,” hosted by Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry (UIN Ar-Raniry) in Banda Aceh.
Focus on Sustainable Development Goals
The workshop concentrated on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and provided a platform for discussions regarding sustainability practices among youth. Approximately 40 students from UIN Ar-Raniry’s Fakultas Tarbiyah and Keguruan, in addition to faculty members, took part in the event. The USM delegation led discussions focused on the importance of SDG initiatives.
Presentations on Global Challenges
Presentations by six USM students addressed SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). These students proposed practical strategies to tackle these global challenges, with the intention of fostering resilience and raising awareness within the ASEAN youth community.
Promoting Educational Initiatives
Dr. Rohaya Abdullah, Project Coordinator from RCE Penang at the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) at USM, emphasized the importance of the collaboration in promoting educational initiatives centered around the SDGs. She remarked that the seminar represented a significant step toward strengthening regional partnerships and deepening young people’s understanding of SDG implementation.

The partnership between USM and UIN Ar-Raniry exemplifies a shared commitment to sustainability, highlighting the influence of cross-border collaboration in motivating youth to act as agents of environmental and social progress within their regions.
