“Advancing One Health Collaboration: Global Coral Reef Experts Convene at KAUST in Saudi Arabia”

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), in partnership with Nature Portfolio, recently hosted the Corals, Coasts and One Health conference in Saudi Arabia. The event aimed to advance science-led environmental collaboration within the Kingdom.
Conference Overview
The three-day conference brought together international coral reef researchers, policymakers, restoration practitioners, and representatives from government-linked entities and national initiatives. Discussions centered on enhancing research collaboration, expediting coral reef protection and restoration efforts, and developing governance strategies to increase the long-term resilience of reefs and coastal areas.
Key Conclusions
A significant conclusion reached during the conference was the agreement that coral reef research should evolve from merely monitoring ecosystem decline to focusing on scalable protection and restoration measures guided by empirical research. Participants emphasized the need for redefining resilience in practical terms and for accelerating the application of scientific findings into effective conservation strategies.
Partnerships and Collaboration
The participation of numerous organizations, including SHAMS, Red Sea Global, and the National Center for Wildlife, underscored the growing partnerships between research institutions and those responsible for ecological conservation and coastal management. The interactions at the conference encouraged new research collaborations and offered networking opportunities for early-career scientists.
One Health Framework
A One Health framework was adopted throughout the conference, highlighting the interconnections between coral reef ecosystems, coastal environments, and human well-being. Participants acknowledged that the degradation of coral reefs directly impacts food security, fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection systems, which are essential for community sustainability.
Insights from Experts
Raquel Peixoto, a Marine Science professor at KAUST and co-organizer of the event, emphasized the importance of healthy reefs for both human health and economic stability, stating that the degradation of these ecosystems poses significant challenges. By bringing together national and global expertise, the conference aimed to facilitate coordinated solutions for the protection of both coral reefs and human communities.
Support from Scientific Journals
The event received support from several prominent scientific journals, aiming to establish an international platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among marine science experts.
