During the 22nd National Congress of Veterinary Medicine Students (NCVMS), held from February 2 to February 7, 2026, at Al Amir Farm and Resort in San Jose, Tarlac, students from the Visayas State University-Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (VSU-FVM) achieved significant recognition in several competitions. The theme of this year’s congress, “Pinagkaysa iti Propesyon ken Panagserbi: Advancing a United, Equitable, and Inclusive Veterinary Future,” highlighted the importance of the event for veterinary medicine students and faculty across the Philippines.
Victorious Delegation
The VSU delegation emerged victorious in both the Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology (APP) Quiz Bee and a video competition. In the APP Quiz Bee, VSU claimed the championship title, surpassing competitors from 11 other veterinary institutions nationwide. The winning team consisted of fifth-year students Jianuelle Encina and Frances Lopez, along with third-year student John Maurillo. Central Mindanao University (CMU) secured the first runner-up position, while Central Luzon State University (CLSU) placed second runner-up.
Reflection on Performance
Encina reflected on the team’s initial performance, noting a challenging start with only four correct answers in the first round. After improving in subsequent rounds, the team climbed to sixth place before ultimately securing the championship.
Encouragement and Passion
Lopez expressed satisfaction over their unanticipated success and encouraged peers to pursue disciplines that resonate with them, emphasizing the role of passion in maintaining motivation and resilience in academic endeavors.
A Noteworthy Video Competition
In addition to their quiz competition success, VSU students Strawberry Cuenca (DVM-4) and Jianuelle Encina (DVM-5) won first place in the “A Week in the Life as a VetMed Student” video competition. Their video effectively showcased the experiences of a veterinary medicine student, resonating with fellow participants and contributing to its acclaim.
Challenges Faced
The team faced various challenges, particularly financial constraints related to their participation in the event. Maurillo acknowledged the critical support of their mentors, crediting their success to the education received at VSU-FVM, particularly in Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology.
Tradition of Excellence
The achievements of VSU’s veterinary medicine students at the NCVMS underscore a tradition of excellence and reinforce the university’s reputation for academic achievement and innovation. Such accomplishments align with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 4, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. VSU has consistently demonstrated strong performances at NCVMS, securing numerous awards in previous years across various categories and competitions.
