Africa University Empowers Women and Girls in STEM: Highlights from TAGDev 2.0 Gender Gap Dialogue

Africa University recently hosted the TAGDev 2.0 program to acknowledge the International Day for Women and Girls in Science, with the theme “From Vision to Impact: Redefining STEM by Closing the Gender Gap.” The event, held on February 12, 2026, attracted over 200 participants, including students from Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences and various local high schools.
Celebratory Atmosphere
The program commenced with a performance by the Africa University Choir, which set a celebratory atmosphere for the gathering. A primary focus of the event was the significant gender disparity within scientific and technological fields. Dr. Pedzisayi Mangezvo, representing the Vice Chancellor, emphasized that women represent nearly half of the global workforce yet constitute only 30% of researchers worldwide, with an even smaller percentage holding leadership roles. He called for structural changes within these industries, framing the advancement of women in STEM as a societal imperative.
Keynote Address
Keynote speaker Dr. Nancy Kwangwa, Deputy Librarian at the Women’s University in Africa, discussed the systemic barriers that limit women’s access to opportunities in STEM. She acknowledged the presence of policies and agendas promoting gender equality but stressed the need for concrete actions instead of superficial commitments.
Interactive Activities
The event included a range of speakers who contributed to the discourse on empowering women in historically male-dominated fields. Mrs. Farirai Mudiwa from Simukai Child Protection facilitated interactive activities that prompted personal reflections on the challenges faced by young women aspiring to enter STEM.
Opportunities in STEM
Moreover, Professor Rudo Mutasa presented potential opportunities within STEM, advocating for women to explore diverse career paths regardless of societal expectations. Her insights resonated with many in attendance who are navigating the complexities of personal aspirations alongside societal pressures.
Collective Commitment
The TAGDev 2.0 program reinforced the critical role of representation and empowerment for women across all disciplines. Participants indicated a shared sense of inspiration and a collective commitment to addressing gender disparities in STEM fields. The discussions fostered a unified vision for a future where all individuals, irrespective of gender, can succeed in the realms of science and technology.
Collaboration and Impact
Organized in collaboration with RUFORUM and the Mastercard Foundation, the TAGDev 2.0 event not only celebrated achievements but also motivated attendees to advocate for transformative changes in their communities.
