Punjabi-First Policy at Guru Nanak Dev University Enhances Multilingual Academia and Accessibility

Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar has implemented a new policy requiring research submissions to be presented in both English and Punjabi. This initiative is part of the Punjabi-First Education, Research and Governance Policy 2026, which aims to improve accessibility and strengthen ties between higher education and the community.
Enhancing Accessibility for Punjabi-Speaking Populations
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Karamjeet Singh, emphasized that the policy is designed to enhance access to research for Punjabi-speaking populations. He noted the university’s commitment to ensuring that research conducted in Punjabi adheres to the same academic standards as English submissions. This approach is anticipated to reduce language barriers and promote inclusivity within academic discussions.
Targeting Students from Rural and Border Areas
The policy specifically targets students from rural and border areas, facilitating their engagement with academic research. By providing research materials in Punjabi across diverse disciplines, the initiative is expected to bolster public understanding and contribute to more effective policy-making in Punjab. This bilingual research framework represents a significant advancement in fostering multilingualism in higher education environments.
