Curtin Malaysia’s Math Enhancement Camp: Building Confidence for Foundation Students Overcoming Maths Anxiety
Curtin University Malaysia recently conducted a Math Enhancement Camp aimed at improving the confidence and mathematical skills of 59 foundation students. This initiative was organized by the School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE) and supported by the Curtin Malaysia Teaching Support Fund 2025, targeting issues such as anxiety and knowledge gaps in additional mathematics faced by new university students.
Camp Details and Objectives
The one-day camp included participants from the Foundation in Commerce and Foundation in Engineering & Science programs, focusing on enhancing understanding of key mathematical concepts, including Exponents, Logarithms, Differentiation, and Integration. The program also emphasized practical problem-solving skills to better equip students for future academic challenges.
Addressing Student Challenges
Associate Teaching Fellow Puteri Nurul Fatihah Mohamad Azli stated that the program was developed in response to concerns regarding students’ anxiety and lack of confidence in mathematics. It was noted that many students’ difficulties stem not from a lack of effort but from insufficient foundational knowledge. The initiative aimed to strengthen their mathematical foundations, enabling them to tackle math-related challenges with greater assurance.
Expert Guidance
The sessions were led by Voon Fui Yen, a mathematics educator from Sekolah Menengah (SM) Sains Miri, who is recognized for her ability to simplify complex concepts through practical strategies and clear explanations. Participant feedback indicated a notable increase in confidence and preparedness to address complex mathematical problems in subsequent coursework.
