VSU-DBS Enhances Marine Conservation with Citizen Science Seminar in Ormoc City

Visayas State University’s Department of Biological Sciences (VSU-DBS) recently conducted a Marine Ecosystem Monitoring and Biodiversity Awareness Seminar on October 29, 2025, at the Ormoc City Public Library. The seminar aimed to enhance citizen science initiatives in marine conservation within the region.
Participation and Educational Focus
The event drew participation from over 200 students representing the City College of Ormoc, particularly those enrolled in business administration, public administration, and social work programs. The seminar provided attendees with essential knowledge on scientific methodologies used to assess the health of coastal ecosystems.
Significance of Interconnected Habitats
Discussions at the seminar emphasized the significance of interconnected habitats, including mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs, which are crucial for sustaining fisheries, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating environmental risks in coastal areas.
Expert Contributions
Three faculty members from VSU-DBS served as resource persons for the seminar. Professor Senona A. Cesar addressed the role of coral reefs in enhancing productivity within the Philippines’ coastal regions. Dr. Donna M. Guarte-Valida focused on seagrass-coral interactions and their effects on fish diversity and ecosystem functionality. Assistant Professor Rafael Junnar P. Dumalan provided insights on citizen science monitoring techniques, including ALWAN methods and the creation of a mangrove report card for local assessments.
Community Engagement Through Project ALWAN
These faculty members are involved in Project ALWAN, an initiative that promotes community engagement in coral reef monitoring across various coastal municipalities.
Curriculum Integration and Biodiversity Discussions
The seminar was integrated into the curriculum of the course “People and the Earth’s Ecosystem” (PEE) and facilitated discussions regarding the current state of biodiversity in the Philippines as well as the threats faced by various species. It also connected academic concepts to real-world environmental challenges, highlighting the necessity for increased community involvement in coastal conservation efforts, particularly in biodiverse and vulnerable regions such as Eastern Visayas.
Advancing Environmental Education
The VSU-DBS continues to advance its environmental education and outreach initiatives, promoting informed marine resource management through projects like Project ALWAN. The department’s efforts aim to empower future leaders and advocate for sustainable practices that aid in the preservation of coastal ecosystems.
Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals
This seminar contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education (SDG 4), Climate Action (SDG 13), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
