Swinburne Sarawak’s Beyond Foundation 2025: Empowering Students with Clear Degree Pathways

On November 7, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus held the Beyond Foundation event, organized by the School of Foundation Studies. This biannual gathering was designed to provide students with information regarding degree pathways and resources available during their transition from foundation studies to undergraduate programs.
Welcome Address
The event began with a welcome address from Ms. Chai Ching Yi, Head of the Department of Engineering, Science, IT, and Multimedia, representing Ms. Hephi Liauw, Head of the School of Foundation Studies. Ms. Liauw encouraged students to explore the diverse degree pathways accessible to them and fostered a spirit of inquiry regarding their future academic trajectories.
Interactive Session with Faculty
An interactive session featuring Heads of Schools was a key component of the event. Students engaged with faculty members, including Associate Professor Dr. Fung Chorng Yuan (Business, Design and Arts), Ms. Rosadelina binti Mustapa (Design), Associate Professor Dr. Chew Jiuan Jing (Engineering and Science), and Associate Professor Dr. Miko Chang May Lee (Information and Communication Technologies). This session aimed to clarify the courses offered and included a question-and-answer segment that provided students with valuable insights to aid their educational decisions.
Panel Discussion
Additionally, the event featured a panel discussion led by Foundation student Leona Aneliswa Mpofu, who facilitated dialogue among five student ambassadors sharing insights from their respective degree programs. These ambassadors highlighted important elements of university life, including teamwork, time management, and personal growth.
Commendation Ceremony
The event concluded with a commendation ceremony, during which Professor Sim Kwan Yong, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, presented letters of commendation to 17 high-achieving students from the Foundation Studies program, recognizing their academic accomplishments.
Conclusion
Beyond Foundation 2025 attracted 139 participants and underscored Swinburne Sarawak’s dedication to providing students with meaningful educational pathways. Furthermore, Swinburne University is included in the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme for 2026, enhancing its appeal for prospective students considering foundation studies that transition into degree programs.
