UGM Dominates 2025 National ONMIPA Competition with Six Gold Medals and Overall Champion Title

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has emerged as the Overall Champion at the 2025 National Mathematics and Natural Sciences Olympiad (ONMIPA) by securing six gold medals, alongside one silver medal, six bronze medals, and one honorable mention across four disciplines: physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

UGM Delegation and Competition Overview

The UGM delegation consisted of 19 students, with five participants competing in each of physics, biology, and mathematics, and four in chemistry. The competition took place at Universitas Padjadjaran from November 16 to 20, 2025. Dr. Hempri Suyatna, UGM’s Director for Student Affairs, recognized the strong performance of the UGM team throughout the competition, from preliminary rounds to finals.

Significance of the Title

Dr. Suyatna noted that achieving the Overall Champion title represents a significant milestone for UGM, which has been striving for this goal for several years after previously finishing as runner-up. He expressed appreciation for the recognition, particularly in light of this year’s competition, which featured 251 participants from 96 universities selected through regional rounds.

Factors Contributing to Success

Multiple factors contributed to UGM’s success, according to Dr. Suyatna. Key elements included a supportive ecosystem for student achievement development, a thorough selection process, mentorship from faculty members, and additional support from the ONMIPA community, as well as the resources provided by the Directorate of Student Affairs. He highlighted the commitment of all participants, who balanced their competition preparations with academic responsibilities.

Future Challenges and Motivation

The ONMIPA has gained increased prestige, and UGM faces the ongoing challenge of sustaining and enhancing its performance to maintain the champion title. This recent victory strengthens UGM’s position as a leading institution in the field of science within Indonesia and is intended to motivate continued innovation within its academic community.

  • Mathematics: Gold medals were awarded to Rama Sulaiman Nurcahyo, Stephen Sanjaya, and Muhammad Hanif; a bronze medal was awarded to Fajar Arif Shodiqin.
  • Biology: A gold medal was awarded to Erlangga Dief Putra Hamam; a silver medal to Kevin Lensrich Kar; bronze medals to Ganang Fattahuddien Attar and Tsaqifa Zuhayra Emery Bagus.
  • Chemistry: A gold medal was awarded to Agatha Novi Febriyanti; bronze medals to Jonathan Aaron Gunawan and Rafif Dista Serano.
  • Physics: A gold medal was awarded to Ahmad Daffa Islamay Fasya Askari; a bronze medal to Alief Arsa Yudhistira; an honorable mention to Zulfa Nailil Muna.
