Curtin Malaysia Strengthens Global Presence with MoU Signing with Liaoning University of Technology, China

On November 28, 2025, Curtin University Malaysia announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Liaoning University of Technology (LUT) from China. This agreement aims to enhance Curtin Malaysia’s international presence and reinforce its commitment to global education and research. The formal signing took place during a ceremony on November 20 at the Curtin Malaysia campus.
Long-term Partnership
The MoU marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between the two institutions, focusing on collaborative academic development, talent exchange, and joint research initiatives, particularly in the fields of engineering, business, and technological innovation.
Delegation Leadership
The LUT delegation was led by Professor Li Yongming, Vice-President of LUT, and included key academic figures such as Professor Gao Qi, Dean of the College of Mechanical Engineering and Automation; Professor Shi Xianrui, Dean of the School of Economics and Management; and Professor Wang Wei, Deputy Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering. They were joined by Lee Poh Whatt, Treasurer of the East Malaysia & North-Eastern China Business Development Alliance, highlighting the regional significance of this collaboration.
Welcoming Remarks
Professor Vincent Lee Chieng Chen, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President, and Chief Executive of Curtin Malaysia, welcomed the delegation, which also included senior representatives from various faculties and departments. The MoU was signed by Professor Lee and Professor Li, with Professor Vu and Professor Gao as witnesses. In his remarks, Professor Lee emphasized the importance of establishing strong international connections, noting that such partnerships are essential for the university’s mission and facilitate collaboration in advanced fields.
Enthusiasm for Collaboration
Professor Li expressed LUT’s enthusiasm for the new partnership, indicating that it aligns with the university’s strategic objectives and paves the way for mutual benefits through international cooperation.
Post-signing Activities
Post-signing, the LUT delegation participated in focused meetings with representatives from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science and Faculty of Business. Discussions explored potential joint research initiatives, student and staff mobility programs, international education pathways, and the development of dual-degree programs.
Tour of Facilities
Additionally, the delegation toured Curtin Malaysia’s advanced facilities, including the collaboration room, trading room, engineering laboratories, and the Curtin Aquaculture Research Laboratories (CARL), showcasing the university’s infrastructure that supports prospective joint initiatives.
Strategic Development
This MoU is seen as a strategic development in Curtin Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to create meaningful global partnerships that promote academic excellence, encourage research innovation, and facilitate intercultural exchange.
