Singapore University Students Experience Vietnam: Insights from the BUV Culture Immersion Programme

International exchange students from Singapore Management University (SMU), representing nine different nationalities, recently participated in the SMU Vietnam EdVentures trip, which is part of the British University Vietnam (BUV) Culture Immersion Programme. This week-long initiative focused on providing an in-depth exploration of Vietnam, aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of the country’s rich culture and evolving identity.
Cultural Immersion
The programme emphasized cultural immersion, allowing students to engage with Vietnam’s traditions through interactive experiences, including language learning and culinary activities. Participants gained insights into local life by interacting with the community, thereby fostering connections that bridged cultural gaps.
Hands-On Workshops
Hands-on workshops played a key role in the programme, where students had the opportunity to create traditional mooncakes and lanterns in preparation for the Mid-Autumn Festival, an important celebration in Vietnam.
Historical Site Visits
Additionally, the programme included visits to significant historical sites such as the Hoa Lo Prison, the Vietnam Military History Museum, and the Temple of Literature. These excursions provided a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s historical context and resilience. The experience concluded with a ceramic-making workshop at Bat Trang pottery village, allowing students to explore the artistic heritage of one of Vietnam’s oldest crafts.
Participant Experience
One participant noted the value of the experience, highlighting the opportunity to explore Hanoi and interact with local people, which offered both cultural and historical insights in a well-organized setting.
Business Field Trip
The programme also featured a business field trip to a leading IT company in Vietnam, providing students with valuable exposure to the nation’s dynamic business landscape. This practical experience is seen as beneficial in complementing academic knowledge, with many international students securing internships or job offers in Vietnam following their participation.
Focus on Sustainability
Students engaged in discussions focused on sustainability, attending workshops on “Sustainable Tourism & AI in Sustainability” and participating in field activities in Ha Long Bay. These components highlighted the significance of environmental protection and the responsibilities of global citizenship.
Programme Goals
The BUV Culture Immersion Programme aims to enhance cross-cultural engagement, linking international students with Vietnam’s development and diverse culture, while also fostering lasting friendships and professional networks.
