Brick the Silence: Engaging in a Swiss LEGO Workshop Experience at UOW Malaysia

On September 30, 2025, the University of Wollongong (UOW) Malaysia hosted a LEGO Challenge Workshop designed to enhance teamwork among students. The event included participation from 27 Culinary and Hospitality students and two lecturers, facilitated by Mr. John A. Daly from the Swiss Education Group.
Workshop Overview
The workshop began with an introduction from Mr. Daly, after which participants were organized into five teams. The challenge required teams to build a LEGO structure without verbal communication, compelling students to rely on gestures, expressions, and intuition. This approach promoted a creative method of teamwork.
Importance of Non-Verbal Communication
Throughout the event, the significance of non-verbal communication became evident as participants experienced moments of confusion that ultimately led to laughter and shared victories. The activity highlighted essential soft skills, including leadership, patience, and adaptability.
Reflection and Learning
After the building session, a reflection period allowed participants to discuss the importance of trust and the impact of non-verbal interactions on collaborative efforts. Mr. Daly concluded the workshop by pointing out that the skills developed in this environment are applicable in professional settings beyond the academic context.
Conclusion
The LEGO Challenge Workshop provided a platform for students to establish connections and reinforced the value of teamwork. Participants left the event not only with physical LEGO structures but also with enhanced relationships and an appreciation for collaborative problem-solving.
