UNP Lecture on Empowering Girls: Combating Early Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy

On September 26, 2025, the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) conducted a seminar titled “Seminar on Empowering Girls: Combating Early Marriage and Pregnancy cum Health and Gender Advocacy” at Solotsolot National High School. The event, organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension alongside the College of Health Sciences, aimed to enhance awareness and provide education to stakeholders regarding issues related to early marriage and teenage pregnancy, as well as to promote gender equality.

Creating Dialogue for Young Women

The seminar gathered students and teachers, creating a forum for dialogue that encouraged young women to pursue educational opportunities, make informed choices about their bodies, and assert their rights. Key topics discussed included reproductive health, legal rights, access to health services, and the role of education and leadership in empowerment.

Expert Discussions

Dr. Romelia Tamayo was among the speakers, offering a detailed discussion on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, which underscored the importance of accurate information in assisting young women in making informed decisions. Prof. Teodora Soliven also spoke about the consequences of early marriage and teenage pregnancy, examining their long-term social, health, and economic effects.

Safe Spaces for Empowerment

Additionally, Mr. Johnny Allagadan Jr. from the UNP Public Information Office delivered a lecture on Safe Spaces, which highlighted the necessity for inclusive and supportive environments that safeguard the rights and dignity of young women.

Coordination and Commitment

The seminar was coordinated by Dr. Fatima Rocamora, UNP’s Vice President for Research and Extension, and included contributions from Prof. May Evelia Ruadap, the Extension Coordinator, along with faculty members from the College of Health Sciences.

This event underscored UNP’s commitment to advancing inclusive education, gender equality, and community empowerment, emphasizing the significance of creating a future where adolescent girls can flourish without the constraints posed by early marriage and teenage pregnancy.
