A doctoral student at Tianjin University, Liu Yuesen, has transitioned from a hobbyist to a technology entrepreneur, achieving notable success with his photography applications, “Border & Watermark Master” and “OMO Retro Camera.” These applications have reportedly amassed over one million users and generated substantial annual revenues, with “Border & Watermark Master” receiving particular acclaim and endorsements from various public figures and social media influencers.
Journey into Entrepreneurship
Liu, who is pursuing a PhD in computer science, initially entered the entrepreneurial space by selling potted succulents. However, challenges in that venture highlighted the importance of risk management and responsiveness to consumer feedback. Subsequently, Liu co-founded an education training company, which encountered difficulties due to changing national policies in the sector.
Creating Innovative Applications
His entry into app development was inspired by the rise in popularity of festive photo frames during the Spring Festival of 2023. Recognizing a market gap, Liu utilized his computer science expertise to develop “Border & Watermark Master.” The application quickly distinguished itself in the market within a month of its launch, offering an extensive library of customizable templates.
Expansion with OMO Retro Camera
Building on this success, Liu launched “OMO Retro Camera,” an app that includes distinctive effects and color filters aimed at vintage photography enthusiasts. Balancing his academic responsibilities with entrepreneurial activities, Liu adjusted his doctoral research focus to incorporate artificial intelligence technologies relevant to his applications.
Support from Tianjin University
He attributes much of his progress to the entrepreneurial ecosystem at Tianjin University, which provided essential mentorship and resources. In particular, the university’s X-lab Entrepreneurship Practicum played a significant role in refining his business strategies and securing investments from alumni.
Future Aspirations
Liu’s future plans involve creating AI tools for photography that enhance user experiences and aim to produce socially beneficial technology.
