Empowering Future Generations: UNM Pharmacy’s Health and Sustainability Initiative at Hulu Langat School

The University of Nottingham Malaysia’s School of Pharmacy is enhancing health and sustainability education among Malaysian youth through a recent outreach initiative at SJK (C) BATU 14, coinciding with both institutions’ centenary celebrations. This event focused on the impacts of microplastics on human health and aimed to integrate education, research, and community engagement as part of the University’s Sustainable Environmental and Operational Strategy (SEOS).
Engaging Young Minds
During the outreach program, 161 primary school students participated in hands-on scientific activities that explored the issue of plastic pollution, a subject that links environmental factors to public health—core components of pharmacy education.
Centenary Theme and Educational Role
Professor Kang-Nee Ting, head of the School of Pharmacy, indicated that this initiative reflects the school’s centenary theme, “Health, Heritage, and Horizons,” emphasizing the role of scientific knowledge in educating and inspiring youth to take action in environmental protection.
Mission for Accessibility in Science
The outreach highlights the School’s mission to make science accessible and relevant, nurturing early interest in health and sustainability. This initiative aligns with national education objectives under the TS25 framework, illustrating how educational institutions can cooperate to bolster scientific literacy and environmental awareness among young students.
Integration of Practical Learning
In addition to the outreach program, the School of Pharmacy is hosting UK MPharm research students at its Malaysia campus, integrating practical learning into its BPharm curriculum. These activities signify the School’s objective to prepare graduates who are globally competent and socially engaged, equipped to address future health challenges.
Commemorating Educational Service
As both the University of Nottingham Malaysia and SJK (C) BATU 14 commemorate their hundred-year history of educational service, this collaboration embodies the potential of innovative education that prioritizes health, environmental consciousness, and significant community engagement.
Global Recognition in Pharmacy Education
The School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham Malaysia is positioned among the top 15 globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2025, offering an educational experience rooted in research and international cooperation, while continuing to inspire the next generation of health professionals.
