Fueling the Future: Enhancing Adolescent Nutrition and Career Pathways in Nutrition

On March 17, 2025, a powertalk event titled “Fueling the Future: Promoting Adolescent Nutrition & Pathways to a Career in Nutrition” was conducted in a hybrid format at the Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L). The event ran from 10:40 AM to 1:10 PM and featured Dr. Sze Yen Tan, an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and Registered Nutritionist affiliated with Deakin University in Australia.

Keynote Presentation by Dr. Sze Yen Tan

Dr. Tan, also serving as a Senior Lecturer in Nutrition Science and a member of the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University, presented on the importance of adequate nutrition during adolescence and its long-term health effects. The presentation included interactive discussions and quizzes, aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding of the impact of nutrition on both physical and cognitive development.

Career Pathways in Nutrition

The powertalk also addressed various career pathways in nutrition, intended to provide students with insights into potential career options following graduation. In addition to Dr. Tan, contributions to the event were made by Mr. Sebastian Gunawan, the Deakin University Partnership Coordinator in Indonesia, and Ms. Alisha T.M. Nasier, Head of i3L’s International Office.

Acknowledgment and Appreciation

At the end of the session, Ms. Widya Indriani, a representative from the Food Science and Nutrition faculty at i3L, recognized Dr. Tan’s involvement by presenting him with a token of appreciation. The event aimed to enhance attendees’ knowledge of nutrition and foster their career aspirations.

Future Collaborations

Following the powertalk, representatives from i3L and Deakin University met to discuss future collaborative opportunities for their food-related departments. Since 2015, i3L and Deakin University have partnered to develop joint programs and activities, and this recent meeting is expected to further expand their collaboration in research, internships, and academic initiatives for both students and faculty members.

This initiative underscores the commitment to improving educational opportunities in the field of nutrition in response to the increasing demand for nutritional expertise.
