USM’s ‘Third Eye Shield’ Wins First Prize at 2024-2025 Huawei ICT Global Competition (Innovation Track)

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) achieved first prize in the Global Finals of the 2024-2025 Huawei ICT Competition for the Innovation Track. The winning team, known as TehTarikTech, consisted of three third-year students from the School of Computer Sciences: Bok Wei Hong (team leader), Lim Miin Ning, and Naomi Tham Kah Mun, under the mentorship of Associate Professor Dr. Chong Yung Wey.
The team previously gained recognition at the national level by winning a competition that allowed them to represent Malaysia in the Asia-Pacific regional finals, where they also secured first prize.
Innovative System: Third Eye Shield
During the Global Finals, the team introduced an innovative system named “Third Eye Shield,” which aims to address issues related to an aging global population. This system integrates the Deepseek Large Language Model (LLM) with Huawei’s cloud computing technology to detect emergencies, such as falls among elderly individuals, and to send early alerts to caregivers. The project’s framework also seeks to enhance mental well-being for both elderly persons and their caregivers through user-friendly interactions, while prioritizing ethical AI use and data privacy.
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals
Additionally, the project aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), by making advanced eldercare technology more accessible and aiming to improve quality of life through early emergency detection.
