An information session for the Harvard-Yenching Institute (HYI) Visiting Scholars Program took place on May 30 at Nanjing University (NJU) for potential candidates. The session was held at the Yangzhou Building on the Xianlin Campus and featured attendees such as Lindsay Strogatz, HYI Program and Communications Manager; Professor Cao Yi, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Office; and Associate Professor Zhao Shuyang, a HYI alumnus. Faculty candidates from various departments, including the School of Liberal Arts, Foreign Language Education Center, School of History, and School of Geography and Ocean Science, were also present.

He noted that NJU actively supports applications for the HYI Visiting Scholars Program each year, emphasizing the university’s commitment to recommending scholars with strong academic records. The program is recognized for its competitiveness, accepting only 20 scholars globally each year, and has seen over ten NJU scholars selected in the past.

Program Details

Strogatz detailed the history of the HYI, along with the program’s eligibility requirements, application timeline, and selection criteria. She addressed inquiries regarding required application materials and visa processes, highlighting that applications for the 2026-2027 program are currently being accepted.

Personal Experience

Zhao Shuyang, who participated in the 2023-2024 program, shared his experiences with the application process and discussed the support provided through the HYI. He encouraged attendees to consider applying, stating that the review process is equitable.

Future Engagement

The information session provided an important forum for NJU faculty members to learn more about international visiting opportunities. The International Affairs Office plans to host additional activities to promote international engagement among faculty and students, including experience sharing, seminars, and showcases of achievements aimed at fostering global collaboration and exchange.
