Rector’s Remarks
During the ceremony, Rector Nasih noted that around 17 percent of UNAIR’s faculty, equating to approximately 300 individuals, now hold professor titles. He regarded this development as a pivotal moment for the university and a basis for its ongoing growth and contributions to society. The Rector asserted that this progress would motivate the institution to further its mission of societal impact.
Strategic Aim for Global Contributions
The introduction of these new professors aligns with UNAIR’s strategic aim to bolster both domestic and international contributions, emphasizing advancements in both theoretical and practical domains. Two of the newly appointed professors specialize in international law, which, according to Rector Nasih, offers a chance for participation in global policy and peacebuilding efforts, underscoring the role of law in promoting societal welfare.
Aspiration for Global Ranking
Rector Nasih encouraged the UNAIR academic community to utilize this milestone as inspiration for the institution’s future progress. There are aspirations for UNAIR to rank 296th in the QS World University Rankings by June 2025, with hopes that the contributions from its 300 professors may facilitate entry into the top 200 universities globally.
Importance of Rankings
The importance of rankings was highlighted as a reflection of educational quality, with implications for the confidence of graduates in the international job market. The Rector explained that the scholarly output of the professors, pending publication in leading journals, would enhance visibility amongst academics and professionals worldwide.
Long-Term Vision
Prof. Dr. H. Sunarto, Chair of the UNAIR Board of Trustees, reflected on the recent appointments as part of a long-term vision to elevate UNAIR from previous rankings in the 700s. With the current position at 308, he stated, “If we remain committed, there’s no reason we can’t reach the top 200—and, God willing, even the top 100.”
Practical Application of Knowledge
He emphasized the necessity of practical application of academic knowledge, advising faculty members against isolationist academic attitudes, asserting that applied knowledge is essential. Prof. Sunarto reiterated the urgency for mental preparedness in effectively utilizing gained knowledge.
Commitment to Academic Excellence
These developments at UNAIR illustrate the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and its ambition to impact society, positioning it prominently within the global educational framework.
