Guest Lecture at IPB University: Inspiring Transmigration Patriots by Alm Kasim Arifin, IPB Alumni

On April 25, 2025, Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara, the Minister of Transmigration, presented a guest lecture titled “Transformation of Transmigration Areas Towards New Growth Centers in the Region” at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Economics and Management, IPB University, located in Dramaga.

Shifting Focus of the Transmigration Program

During the lecture, Minister Iftitah emphasized a shift in the focus of the transmigration program from simple population relocation to the development of integrated and sustainable economic zones. The objective of this approach is to stimulate economic attraction that encourages population mobility naturally, thereby improving community welfare.

Inspiration from Kasim Arifin

The minister referenced the late Kasim Arifin, an alumnus of IPB University, as an inspiring figure whose commitment to the people of Maluku influenced the design of this program. This dedication was highlighted as a model to be transmitted to the younger generation through the Patriot Transmigration initiative.

Targets for Economic Growth

Iftitah set a target for economic growth in transmigration areas, aiming to surpass 8% while significantly reducing poverty and empowering local communities through inclusive industrialization efforts. He compared the role of patriot transmigrants in these regions to that of medical faculty in a hospital, describing them as vital contributors to community development and empowerment.

Students’ Role in Community Development

The minister urged students to consider their responsibility in applying their knowledge to meet community challenges and aid in national progress.

Synergy Between Initiatives

IPB University Rector, Prof. Arif Satria, spoke about the necessity for synergy between the transmigration program and the Patriot Transmigration initiative to effectively address national food security needs. He reiterated IPB University’s commitment to regional development throughout Indonesia and its intention to influence the nation positively through various innovative measures.

Memorandums of Understanding

The event also featured the signing of four memorandums of understanding (MoU) and cooperation agreements between IPB University, the Ministry of Agriculture, and other related agencies aimed at the development and empowerment of transmigrants and local communities.

These initiatives underscore IPB University’s ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and integrity in tackling agricultural and economic challenges within the framework of national development goals.
